All you need to know about our high quality, bespoke Maths Curriculum

Curriculum & Pedagogy

Maths teaching at The Coombes combines essential fluency and arithmetic skills with reasoning and problem-solving to ensure children have the skills needed to use their maths in all aspects of their lives.

We utilise the Abacus Maths scheme of learning which is based on research and skills that are sequenced progressively to enable children to build upon prior learning to confidently use and apply their maths knowledge using a robust foundation of akills and knowledge.

The four pillars of Abacus Maths are:

Place value: developing a robust understanding of how our number system works.

Number facts: developing a really good bank of number facts.

Models and images: a developmental approach to the use of consistent, solid images and models that grows with each child as they develop their mathematical understanding.

Doubling and halving: developing a comprehension of the key mathematical functions based on doubling and halving.

Daily maths lessons provide opportunities for children to learn and revisit mathematical vocabulary and use it in context to make connections between mathematical concepts.  This is paired with carefully considered visual and pictorial representations that build upon the use of physical manipulatives, both of which teachers use to model concepts within each lesson.

Planned fluency and opportunities to revisit previously taught content help to develop a mastery approach. Mastery maths is when a child has achieved a secure understanding of mathematical concepts and processes, combined with genuine procedural fluency. A child who has mastered a particular skill is able to apply their understanding of maths concepts and procedures to reason and to solve different types of problems, including where the skill is either embedded in a different context, or where a choice of method has to be made.
