Spelling

We use the programme No Nonsense Spelling from Year 2 to Year 6. The focus of the programme is on the teaching of spelling, which embraces knowledge of spelling conventions, patterns and rules; but integral to the teaching is also the opportunity to promote the learning of spellings, including statutory words, common exceptions and personal spellings.

Children learn spellings through discrete lessons that focus on the patterns they can apply to other words, whilst also exploring those spellings that do not 'fit the rule'. From these investigative opportunities, pupils are then taught to develop strategies to determine correct spelling application, considering the 'spelling rules' they know, as well spelling definitions within context. These spelling discussions happen throughout all subjects, where children are encouraged to apply their knowledge to new vocabulary and contexts.
